Pictures for the South Wales Art Society Exhibition

Lily Pond Textile Collage
A Heron's View

I design, make and create unique textile pictures. My artwork features texture and pattern with strong, vibrant coloured threads. The intricate stitches are produced by machine or hand (sometimes both) onto hand painted backgrounds or layered fabric. My inspiration comes from personal experience and the visual interest within a chosen theme. Drawings, colour studies and photographs are used as a starting point.

Mountains Landscape
Brecon Beacons and Pontsticill Reservoir

My inspiration for this picture comes from a recent visit to Ponsticill Reservoir.I was fascinated by the shape of the vast mountain range in contrast to stillness of the non-reflective water in the foreground. Using sketches, photos & watercolour studies, I created a painted background onto cotton, layered with organza fabric. The final design was carefully planned & drawn, before embroidering digitally.

Thread Painted Wave
This picture was the result of studies of waves at Rhossili in the Gower. My aim was to capture the calm ocean, growing into a huge wave, then breaking into rippled water.I used shades of blue and green to dye calico fabric. Then by using free motion embroidery, I created the picture by literally drawing with a sewing machine. Only two stitches were used, that is a running stitch & zig-zag (also known as thread painting). Finally, I added a touch of acrylic paint to highlight the crest of the wave
